(reminiszenz) is a short composition for 7 strings, that I originally wrote for the Berlin based music ensemble Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop. The piece had its premiere on May 12, 2018 at Radialsystem V Berlin as part of the performance concert “FORT/DA I – Terrain Vague“, a project by the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop with a choreography by myself.

When working on the conceptual backbone of this evening, Tilman Kanitz, the artistic director of the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop at that time, and I had the idea to apply the Fibonacci-spiral as a template for organizing the performance space : several podium-islands for the audience as well as the different spots for the musicians where chosen in relation to the line of the spiral and its respective proportions. Since the German title Fort/Da translates as away or gone (fort) and here or there (da), the use of a spiral with its back-and-forth movement made sense for this particular project and further more gave us the opportunity to create unexpected angles and perspectives for the audience’s eyes and ears.
Inspired by these experiments with Fibonacci proportions, I continued these explorations by using the Fibonacci row (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13…) for my composition (reminiszenz) in the way that all note and rest values as well as the tempi correspond to the numbers of the Fibonacci row. Harmonically, the piece consists of 12 repeating chord-clusters that I formed in response to a fragment from César Franck’s String Quartet in D-major, which itself was a centre piece of this performance concert.
